Allan Mansell, lithograph (detail), 2004
Allan is currently showing at CBBoss hairdressers in Sandy Bay. The trend for business’s to open their doors to artists is a good one for both the business, who get a rotation of interesting art work, and the artist, who gets to have work out on show. Allan’s show is finishing up on Friday, with a new exhibition scheduled in, so if you get a chance its worth having a look before they come down. His print work has been primarily lithograph, with some etching, and he works with elements he has developed to express his cultural heritage. The detail above shows the miniture ants, each one meticulously drawn in lithograph ink, which collectively create the whole image.

Allan Mansell, lithograph, 2004
Allan writes (Indigenous Law Bulletin, University of New South Wales):
"The artwork that I produce is unique in that the Tasmanian Aboriginal art culture has been lost in a short period of time. Consequently, the images that I create are my own. Because the culture which we had was stolen and discarded, I have to create my own symbols. I use my art to tell stories about my past, stories from my family and Elders. This artwork reflects my knowledge of the Tasmanian bush. Within my work a political context has emerged."
More of his work can be seen on the Art Mob website.
