Artists Live at the TMAG
Hunter Island Press members set up a print making demonstration at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery to educate visitors about print processes and promote our organisation. This is part of the TMAG’s ongoing Artists Live in the Gallery program which introduces visitors to the various ways in which artists work to produce the art that eventually hangs on the walls of the gallery. Most visitors are amazed to find out how much work goes in to producing these works of art and much of our time is spent explaining processes, procedure and rationales i.e. why we choose one process over another to produce a particular effect or achieve a certain outcome.
While I was drawing on polyester litho plates the rest of the team were hard at work demonstrating/explaning their own particular methods.
Alicja demonstrates the collagraph process by inking up and printing on her small hand press. Some of Anna’s multi colour etchings and plates are visible in the foreground.
Here Anna demonstrates her preferred process of drawing into a hard ground on a steel plate using a “dead” biro.
While, ever the optomist, Christine starts work on a reduction process linocut using a hand barren (three layers were completed and printed during the afternoon).
Tracey discusses the use of the computer to prepare images for output for use in a variety of print mediums. Although her preferred method is screenprinting she also works with digital images, either on their own or in combination with other processes, on fine art paper.
Once again this was judged a great success both by our members and by the Museum’s staff and we look forward to a return visit next year.
