Janice Luckman

My prints are images that evoke memories of my childhood, a typical country upbringing in the 50’s and a nostalgia for the comforts of home, the objects, activities and the people associated with these events. I have been making prints inspired by the collections of odds and ends accumulated over the years that I find difficult to discard as they trigger these nostalgic memories. These collections include magazines, recipes, fabric etc.

I have fond memories of the summers of my childhood. This was the busiest time of the year for my mother and she enjoyed seeing the results of her work. She took considerable pride in the satisfaction of a full pantry, with the Fowlers preserving jars lined up in their colourful rows. This was visible evidence of a good housewife and mother, and an essential part of her identity. These images evoke the atmosphere of the kitchen of the era, the smells and tastes and aid in retaining these memories.
