Luisa Romeo

Luisa is currently studying for her MFA  by coureswork at the University of Tasmania, School of Art.  Her masters proposal outline follows:

A graphic investigation of colloquial phrases, sayings and w o r d s

Research proposition:

I plan to explore my interest in the absurdities of language through colloquial phrases, sayings and words. The origin and meaning of chosen phrases will be explored, and included as part of the production of a dictionary as a glossary. I am undertaking this particular project, as I find this use of language a very peculiar thing at times. The addition of phrases, sayings and metaphors in our society adds to develop a very colourful language. They activate the listeners/reader inner eye to produce images that are just as vivid as visual ones.

I intend to distort the literal meaning of particular sayings and phrases through illustrating the connotations suggested. I will be using the processes of lithography, etching and digital printmaking to complete this project.

The aim is to produce a body of prints that will take form in a series of books that will also incorporate text. A main book will be produced in a dictionary type form.

Devil's Dancing Hour

My current prints comprise of beasts that roam the landscape in their own unique way. These creatures initially wore masks that were interchangeable depending on moods and behaviour the wearer wanted to adopt. They are now developing into sub humans where the mask is no longer an object that can be removed but they merge into the torso to become a unique hybrid that is evolving. Their masculine and athletic bodies represent the early images of Greek gods where they dominated the land and others. These hybrids also have become gods themselves that dominate, destruct and and tower above the landscape. Like the human race. I am wanting to create links between these hybrids an humanity. They represent us and how we relate to one another and the landscape that surrounds us.

Although this may appear to be friendly procession, there are underlying issues of eventual disaster. These hybrids have come together for a variety of reasons as they face each other in an almost duel like situation. The animal heads remain on the body as a permanent fixture include the goat’s head, which in many cultures represent the devil and all things evil. Leading the procession is a version of a vulture like bird that will devour any uncovered flesh and on the end marches the elephants. The elephants are there to keep the peace but as they are outnumbered they stand little chance. Disaster is ominous.

The landscape is red with hatred, anger and death. Emotions and acts that we as humans are capable if pushed.(or slightly nudged).
