Selwyn Stein

Selwyn Stein was born in South Africa and came out to Australia in 1986 with his wife and two children, where he settled in Melbourne, Victoria and worked for several major Graphic Reproducing Companies.
Having worked as a Graphic Reproducer all his working life he came into contact with many artworks from all walks of life. These made him very interested in pursuing the idea of going to Art School and learning more about making art, using various methods of Printmaking, as a tool to accomplish his. growing passion to express his ideas & thoughts.

Selwyn’s career started in South Africa, where he worked as an apprentice Compositor in a large Graphic Reprohouse, setting hotmetal type. He learnt the technique of setting up Advertising advertisements using Monotype, before gaining the skills of Photolithography, at the same company. As a Photolithographer he learnt Camera operating, using Industrial, horizontal and vertical cameras, Phototypesetting machines, Headliner machines and both colour and black and white film stripping.
Selwyn worked at several companies in South Africa gaining more experience in the field of Graphic Reproduction before coming out to Australia. He then moved from Melbourne to Hobart where he continued to work in this field.
In 1996 he began suffering from health problems and decided to hang up his gloves as a Photolithographer and enter the Art world. He started this by doing a short course at TAFE in Hobart, in Printmaking, before entering University in 2001 to begin a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, majoring in Printmaking.
